Undeniably Qatar is not the once unheard of country it used to be. Through the recent years the small country has flourished immensely in many different aspects. It is with the leadership and vision of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Al-Misned that Qatar has prospered and strived to carry out its full potential. The vision focuses on six central themes: Islamic faith, partnership, active citizenship, global ethics/human rights, international involvement, and care of the environment and Sheikha Mozah has been active in all of the above.
"Islam is not just in the mosque; it weaves through every aspect of who we are." The steps taken by Her Highness in democratic reform, promoting education, family support, and enhancing community welfare are all in line with Islamic principles. Working to preserve and protect affluent legacy of Islamic art, heritage, and culture Sheikha Mozah established the Faculty of Islamic Studies within Qatar Foundation’s Education City. Qatar Foundation was established in 1995 by His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of Qatar, to change the country’s current mineral wealth as a vehicle to convert the country's current, but temporary, mineral wealth into durable human capital, Qatar Foundation is chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned.
Education City is QF’s flahship project accomplishing Qatar’s vision, and providing a new hub of learning in the Middle East. It is the best opportunity for students across the region to get a world class education within an Arab environment. Education City also demonstrates partnership by bringing in together worldwide leading institutions of learning, assembling people from different backgrounds, culture, faiths, and generations to work together. Various initiatives are especially carried out in Education City to ensure active citizenship, so that nationals play an essential role in the future of their nation. As President of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA), Sheikha Mozah has also initiated and supported programs to help build strong families for the future.
Along with her work in education, Shiekha Mozah has taken
a leading role in promoting peace and cross cultural understanding in an effort to bring peace. Through her work with UNESCO and the UN Alliance of Civilizations she helps create programs to educate and protect victims of human rights abuses, the victims usually being women, children and youth.
"A Flower Each Spring" is just one program initiated by Her Highness to promote the importance of environmental care. The project is aimed to teach young people to help make this vision a reality. It teaches young girls and boys through fieldtrips to learn about and enjoy Qatar’s environment.
In the past when I have been asked “Where are you from?” I would reply “Qatar” and leave the questioner completely confused therefore I’ve learned to simply say “Dubai”, avoid confusion, and leave the questioner smiling and saying “aha Dubai! Very hot”. However, when I am now asked that question I respond “Qatar” and am replied with a kind smile and the words “Ooh rich, plenty of oil!”. Though now known for its wealth and oil, I have now doubt that Qatar will soon be known for much more as Her Highness Sheikha Mozah continues to lead us to reach our full potential and leave our mark in the world.
