Experience- who cares? Qualifications-who cares? Nationalities -now that’s what people are talking about. It would seem that people would be paid according to experience, but in Qatar, the story is different. Here, people are paid according to their nationalities which could cause some speculation for people who are interested in coming to Qatar, but for some people this does not stop them from achieving their dreams.
Imagine this; an American man walks in for an interview at a gas company. The person who is interviewing the man sees that the man has white skin. The interviewer asks “What is your nationality, sir?” The man replies, “I am an American citizen.” There and then, the job is given to the American, just because of his passport. His salary is immediately higher than the Indian man who has fifteen years of experience and had a decent reputation at his previous location. The interviewer does not ask for any qualifications, past experiences or work ethic. This person may not even know how to work, and the boss of the gas company hires him. This scenario is based on research and facts from various sources. Research shows have stated that these types of incidents occur in many office and business settings where contracts have been signed and prestigious awards have been given.
This act which is common around the Qatar and the rest of the Gulf is immoral and against the laws society has placed on us. Statistics show that Qataris are paid 15% more than the average man simply because their positions are higher. Ashfaq Bengali, an employee at Texas A&M in Qatar, said that this is because companies are mandated by law called Qatarization to hire Qatari citizens, whereas a Filipino is not, therefore, the Filipino will be paid an unreasonable amount which may not allow him and his family to sustain a suitable lifestyle. This is considered “inhumane” in many dictionaries. Although this booming nation implements policies such as these, people are still eager to become a part of this diverse society because of the change of lifestyle and setting. Qatar has much to offer, which is the main reason why people still come to work-even if they are faced with this type of discrimination. The amount a person gets paid is one of the many reasons why there has been an influx of foreigners from the West.
The next time a person is offered a job and does not know about what they are about to take on should think about what could happen later rather than looking into how different people get paid based on their nationalities. The journey which is made by the average human being and the success that he or she creates is more important than what the person is making and the discrimination which they are facing because of their nationalities.

A very informative article, I never knew this type of discrimination existed anywhere before, let alone in Qatar. Well written and well researched, good job. :)

The sad thing is that discrimination in the workplace is evident not just in Qatar, but all over the world. We should really be doing more to stop it from occurring. This is an interesting article. Thanks for bringing this issue to the attention of more people.

Thanks for your feedback. I agree that many people do not know about this form of discrimination or that there are so many ways that people can discriminate.

This is a good article and I have witnessed this because I live in South Africa.
In South Africa, before 1994, there was the era of apartheid where you were judged by your skin colour. This is the same scenario as what you wrote about. In this case the unskilled white man received a higher salary than the skilled black man. South Africa is now a country with the greatest difference between the rich and the poor due to this. Now the disadvantaged man of colour has a better chance of getting the Job than the white man with the same qualifications. This is called Affirmative action. This has helped the country and it should be done in Qatar.

I do not really understand what the incentive is for an employer living in Qatar to hire an unskilled American rather than a skilled Indian. Is it because of government policies as it is where I live in South Africa because if not then it does not really make sense why a Qatari employer would hire a lesser skilled man just because of his nationality.
In the article there is you have not given a reason for this. Could you please elaborate?
